Rooftop solar

How much do solar panels cost?

Around £7,600 to install a typical 4.5kWp system, on the Energy Saving Trust's estimate (Which?, 30 October 2026). See solar panel costs.

Do I need planning permission?

Usually not for a house in England, if the panels keep within the permitted development limits. Listed buildings and some protected areas are different. See solar panels and planning permission.

Can I be paid for the power I don't use?

Yes, through a Smart Export Guarantee tariff, if your installation is MCS certified and you have a meter that records exports. See the SEG explained.

Batteries

Do I need solar panels for a battery?

No. A battery can charge from the grid at a cheaper rate. See home battery costs.

Can I use a battery with a plug-in kit?

No. The plug-in solar rules don't allow a battery with a plug-in kit.

Plug-in solar

What is plug-in solar?

A small solar kit you set up yourself in the garden. It plugs into a weatherproof outdoor socket and feeds up to 800W into your home. See plug-in solar explained.

Where can plug-in kits be used?

England, Scotland and Wales, one kit per household, registered free at myplugin.solar before first use. Not in Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands.
